Mr Syrskyi also said that Russian forces were "exhausting themselves" in their grinding push to take Bakhmut, giving Kyiv a window of opportunity for a counterstrike. "Very soon, we will take advantage of this opportunity, as we once did near Kyiv, Kharkiv, Balakliia and Kupiansk," he added, referencing Ukraine's counteroffensive last year that pushed Russia back from the country's capital and large swathes of the northeast. In a Telegram post, Colonel General Oleksandr Syrskyi vowed to retake the region as the war in Ukraine continued to wear down Russia's military. The Ukrainian counteroffensive in Bakhmut will begin "very soon" and Russia's assault on the eastern city is causing them to "lose considerable strength", the commander of Ukraine's general forces has said.
